The Data Science Hub in the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery collaborates closely with the Data Science Institute to provide data science training and implement data science into research practices across campus. The Data Science Hub executes a mission for community engagement and learning opportunities for campus researchers through a variety of services, including:
- regular trainings (including Carpentries workshops) around fundamental data science and computational skills
- consultations with Data Science Facilitators who can recommend learning pathways and project strategies, and liaise contacts with collaborators and data science experts
- community events and co-sponsored seminars that bring together researchers and other partners around relevant data science topics

Hub Services
Attend Trainings
Learn data science skills and tools that you can apply to your research. Data Science Hub workshops, in collaboration with the UW-Madison Carpentries community, teach the skills and tools needed for researchers to reproducibly analyze, model, and gain insights from data.
Get 1:1 Help
Discover campus data and computing resources. Discuss ways to enhance your research with data science. Collaborate with data scientists and other researchers on campus. Each week we offer Coding Meetup, an "office hours" format to get help from our Facilitators on your coding projects. We also offer individual appointments outside of Coding Meetup to connect you with a facilitator that has the expertise you need.
Build Community
Interested in joining a community of data science professionals, researchers, and practitioners? As part of the Data Science Hub’s mission to provide year-round support to data science practitioners, we lead several communities on campus.
Our communities focus on supporting the learning of data science tools, machine learning, ethics, and computational biology in ecology and evolution.
Hub Communities
UW-Madison Carpentries Community
The University of Wisconsin-Madison has a long-standing relationship with the Carpentries, a global organization of researchers who volunteer their time and effort to create workshops that teach software engineering and data analysis skills to other researchers.
EVIL
The Ethics, Values, Information, and Law (EVIL) reading group pursues scholarship in the intersections of ethics, law, and data and information technologies. The EVIL Reading group meets every three weeks (roughly), Fridays, online, and is hosted in collaboration with the iSchool and ML+X.
ML+X
ML+X is a community of practice that brings together students, researchers, and industry professionals who share an interest in using machine learning (ML) methods to advance their work (X).
ComBEE
ComBEE is a group of researchers at UW-Madison interested in computational biology in ecology and evolution.
