Advance Your Training in Data Science
Learn data science skills and tools that you can apply to your research. Data Science Hub workshops, in collaboration with the UW-Madison Carpentries community, teach the skills and tools needed for researchers to reproducibly analyze, model, and gain insights from data,
such as:
- Data Analysis & Visualization (Unix shell, Python, R)
- Data Cleaning & Management (OpenRefine, SQL)
- Machine Learning (Intro to ML, Deep learning)
- Version Control & Containerization (Git/GitHub, Docker)
Workshops Archive
Thanks to the Carpentries community, all workshop materials are open-access and freely available for all to learn from. To review the lesson materials for each topic listed above, or any other topic we’ve taught, visit the Workshop Archive.

More data science @ uw workshops
There are many other campus organizations that also offer data science workshops. If we do not have an upcoming workshop that fits your needs, we encourage you to visit data science @ uw to see more workshop opportunities across campus.
Request a Workshop
The Data Science Hub helps to organize custom, small-group workshops by local Carpentries instructors. If you’d like to request a workshop for your group, please fill out a request form.
We host a max of 2 requested workshops a month, subject to availability. Workshops that require development of new curriculum may take several months to put together. However, you can find the links to existing lessons in our lessons materials page, which can be taught on shorter notice. Workshops for groups outside the UW will have a fee based on our current rates.
Learn to Teach & Teach to Learn
Are you curious about teaching computational skills to researchers? Did you struggle to learn programming and data best practices and want to help others learn those skills? Join the Carpentries Instructional Community to advance your teaching and technical skills while helping others!
Our ability to offer numerous workshops year-round is made possible through UW-Madison’s Carpentries Community — a group of volunteers dedicated to teaching computational workshops that quickly advance researchers’ ability to reproducibly analyze, visualize, and model data.
If you’re curious about helping or instructing at a workshop, review the FAQs page and join the Carpentries Google group to be notified of upcoming volunteer opportunities. You do not need to be an expert in a topic that you’d like to help teach, and members have plentiful opportunities to attend workshops to advance their skills. Members also have the opportunity to participate in an optional instructor training program.
